DECIEM launched in 2013 with one product in one market. Today the abnormal beauty company’s portfolio consists of over 50 products in more than 15 markets. To learn which of the company’s products are best for keeping your face clean and hydrated while wearing a mask, we spoke to Jack Wardlaw, DECIEM’s European Education Manager.
Beauty brand DECIEM is anything but normal. Functioning as an umbrella company for a handful of different brands, DECIEM’s vertically integrated structure, which includes its own laboratory, in-house manufacturing, in-house e-commerce, in-store stores, and proprietary marketing, gives it the kind of agility and flexibility most brands can only dream of.
Throughout 2020, the company has kept up what separates it from the rest, with innovations like DECIEM AT HOME leading the way. Launched in April, DECIEM AT HOME lets customers get the experience they’re familiar with when they can’t make it into a store, giving shoppers the ability to connect with store teams for virtual consultations through text, chat, and video.
As mask-wearing has surged under guidance from the CDC, one of the leading questions from DECIEM customers is how to keep their faces fresh and clean. Colloquially known as “maskne,” DECIEM’s European Education Manager Jack Wardlaw tells Elsewhere that this condition presents as eruptions of inflamed lesions (breakouts) in areas of friction, pressure, or occlusion of the skin where masks sit.
While the causes of “maske” are not fully understood, it is hypothesized that the continual pressure on, and occlusion of, the skin when wearing a mask, causes an increase in sebum production. Combined with excess sweating, this may cause a buildup of sebum, sweat, and other debris inside pores, leading to their obstruction.
Since the bacteria majorly associated with acne is anaerobic, meaning it thrives in an oxygen-poor environment, this obstruction of sebum flow creates the ideal conditions for proliferation of the bacteria and subsequent eruption of inflamed lesions. These lesions can be further exacerbated by the constant friction of fabric against the site of the eruption, which can produce a compromised skin barrier and increase the inflammation.
All that is to say that when crafting a new skincare routine, it’s important to consider the friction masks generate on the skin, as this can lead to an irritated or compromised barrier. And while acne is a skin condition that may require medical treatment, a hydrating skincare routine is something everyone should consider ahead of yet another season of heavy mask-wearing.
